Newman
Institute The Newman Institute was inspired by the John Henry Newman (1801-1890), the English Cardinal and convert. Deeply rooted in the Catholic tradition he participated fearlessly in the cultural debate of his day. Today the Jesuits in Sweden who founded the Institute wish to embody Newman’s approach to dialogue in the context of modern secularized Sweden. Founded in 2001, the Newman Institute offers courses, seminars and cultural events on subjects covering theological, philosophical and cultural issues. It also publishes the widely respected periodical Signum, offering Catholic perspectives on Church, culture and society. At the moment the Newman Institute is applying to the Swedish government for academic accreditation. The intended curriculum covers a wide range of theological, philosophical and cultural issues and is planned to commence in fall 2008. By then the Institute will be educating priestly candidates and offer a regular exam in theology. The Newman Institute has well developed contacts with institutions abroad. |
